Portrait & Commercial Photography Across Australia

Commercial photography is bought differently from personal work, and the difference is usage rights. You are not simply paying for a photographer’s time — you are licensing images for a defined purpose, territory and duration. A headshot for your website and the same frame on a bus shelter carry very different fees, and a quote that ignores this distinction will cost you later. The photographers here work to briefs, shot lists and brand guidelines, and quote against a deliverable count rather than an hourly rate.

How to brief and book portrait & commercial photography

Send a written brief before asking for a quote: how many final images, where they will appear, for how long, and in which markets. That single paragraph is what separates a useful quote from a guess. For product and catalogue work, supply the exact pixel and background specifications your sales channel requires — marketplace listings are rejected for off-white backgrounds surprisingly often. Ask whether styling, props, models and retouching are inside the quote or billed separately, since on commercial shoots those line items frequently exceed the photographer’s own fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are usage rights and why do they change the price?
Usage rights define where an image may appear, for how long and in what territory. Website and social use is inexpensive. National print advertising, packaging or out-of-home costs considerably more, because the image is generating proportionally more value and the photographer is forgoing other licensing. Expect to specify the medium, duration and territory in the quote rather than buying images outright.
Can I just buy the copyright outright?
Sometimes, but it is expensive and usually unnecessary. Under Australian law the photographer owns copyright by default unless it is assigned in writing. A full buyout can cost several times a standard licence. In practice an exclusive licence covering the uses you actually need gives you the same commercial freedom at a fraction of the cost.
How many products can be photographed in a day?
For straightforward pack shots on white, a well-run studio day covers 30 to 60 SKUs. Add styling, multiple angles, or reflective and transparent surfaces such as glassware and jewellery, and that drops to 10 to 20. Complex hero images with props and compositing may take half a day each. Send sample products in advance for an accurate quote.
Is retouching included?
Basic correction — exposure, colour, dust and minor blemishes — is normally included. Advanced work such as compositing, liquid pouring, skin retouching to advertising standard or removing backgrounds to a clipping path is usually quoted per image, commonly $25 to $150 depending on complexity. Clarify which tier you are getting before the shoot.
